Art in the dark! Welcome to Torchlight Tours at Newcastle Art Gallery designed especially for kids and their parents. It’s a fun and educational adventure through the art gallery.
We show up at the art gallery with our torches shortly before sunset eagerly awaiting this fun event.
To count down the time before the event start, kids could decorate a bunny mask, an ideal accessory for an Easter-themed Torchlight Tour.
It was then time for the event to begin. We start with with some craft with kids having the option to draw on a t-shirt or a canvas.
After completing their masterpieces, it’s tour time for little detectives. Tours run periodically throughout the evening enabling you to choose the order of activities.
Kids are provided with a clipboard containing different things to observe in the exhibition. For this event, the kids are investigating the works of the current Michael Zavros exhibition MAGIC MIKE.
It’s a unique exhibit which examines the notion of the body beautiful and concepts of male beauty, hence the fitness equipment incorporated into the artworks and the exhibition.
Consulting their clipboards, kids have to look for artworks containing a flexed muscle, a poodle, gym equipment and a black orchid.
The night finishes outside with some food and drinks in the sculpture garden.
Torchlight Tours are a fantastic family outing and provide age-appropriate activities that tie into current exhibitions. Staff at the Newcastle Art Gallery create a welcoming atmosphere for little culture vultures. It’s a wonderful introduction for children to learn to appreciate art as well as being inspired to create their own artworks.
