Big trains, small trains, steam and diesel too, rushing round the tracks, choo choo choo!
As today was such a beautiful Sunday afternoon, we decided to take our little Thomas & Friends fan to Edgeworth Trains. On the last Sunday of every month (except for December), the Lake Macquarie Live Steam Locomotive Society provides model train rides to the public. There’s a variety of trains such as steam and diesel and different rail routes (both elevated and ground-level) so you can easily spend a couple of hours watching and riding trains.
The popularity of Edgeworth trains with families was evident today. The place was packed with people. Although the lines for train rides were long, kids and adults waited patiently and the lines moved pretty quickly. You don’t really notice the wait as there’s so much activity just observing the trains pull in and out of the station unloading and loading passengers. We even got to see some drivers putting coal in their engines. Do note that fully enclosed footwear must be worn to ride the trains.
There’s lots more fun once you get on to the trains and start whizzing around on the rail tracks through tunnels and under bridges. Each ride was approximately 7 to 10 minutes in duration so it wasn’t too long for younger children.
It’s a wonderful service that these volunteer train drivers provide. Train rides are free. However, they ask for a donation with donation boxes located around the grounds. These donations help to maintain the grounds and contribute to the services provided.
Edgeworth trains is a popular spot for parties, picnics and BBQs. (There must have been at least 20 birthday parties there today!). There’s shaded picnic grounds, BBQs supplied with wood, a kiosk and conveniently located toilet blocks.
Location: Off Velinda Street, Edgeworth with limited off-street parking.
Run Dates & Times: Last Sunday of the month (except December). Run times during daylight savings are approximately 1 pm to 4 pm (weather permitting) with a 15 minute break for the drivers at 2.30pm. After daylight savings finishes, it will run from 12pm to 3pm with a break at 1:30pm.
Cost: Free but donations encouraged. Fully enclosed footwear must be worn to ride the trains.
