An Aussie Year written by Tania McCartney and illustrated by Tina Snerling is a perfect book to read in the lead up to Australia Day. Featuring a set of five Aussie children, this is a picture book for 6 to 10 year old exploring twelve months in the life of Australian children.
Month by month, Ned, Lilly, Zoe, Kirra and Matilda, illustrate the different activities and events which take place around Australia such as Australia Day, Henley-on-Todd Regatta Footy Finals, Melbourne Cup. They also mention uniquely Australian things such as traditions, sports, food, flora and fauna and even the different climates across Australia.
The book is a beautiful summary of a child’s life growing up in Australia. And I especially love the diversity in this book. The five characters reflect the diversity of modern Australia with different ancestries. Their lives show the richness of life in Australia with different customs and traditions being celebrated alongside traditional Australian ones.
I loved reading this book with my child. This would also make a wonderful gift for kids visiting from other countries. I’m planning to buy a few copies to send to friends’ children overseas.
